The White Cedar Nature Center is part of a 15 million dollar expansion of Peninsula State Park in 2020. The expansion will double the size of the Nature Center to accommodate a 50-person meeting and activity room, indoor accessible bathrooms, as well as extra space for administrative offices and storage. The Center was originally constructed in the 1950s and this will be the first significant work done to the building since then. Friends of the Peninsula State Park organized to donate $360,000 to go toward the expansion. 

The Nature Center is open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day and operates between 10 AM and 2 PM. When the building itself isn’t open, there’s still a special activity to experience December through late March. Welcome to The Chickadee Club. 

The Nature Center’s location under plentiful spruce trees has made it the perfect place to view birds. The friendly chickadee flocks to the area and is known to eat from visitors’ outstretched palms. Naturalist Kathleen Harris began The Chickadee Club in the late 1990s, an informal group where the only requirement for membership is an admiration for the tiny birds. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own black oil sunflower seeds to feed the chickadees.
